BREAKING THROUGH an EXERCISE PLATEAU
By Heather Moreno

The problem with most people’s exercise program is that they do the same thing day-in and day-out, month after month, and after an initial bit of weight loss, become frustrated because they are not getting any more results. They’ve hit a plateau. So, they quit their exercising and gain back any little bit of weight they did lose.
One of the main causes of the plateau effect stems from not monitoring heart rate during exercise. The goal is not to continually workout at a higher and higher heart rate as doing so can lead to burnout and injury, but to challenge the body by working out at varying intensities. We recommend using a heart rate monitor, as it is the easiest and most accurate method available.
A heart rate monitor allows continuous monitoring of your heart rate during exercise and some of the most basic models will show you your average and maximum heart rates for each workout. Heart rate training also makes exercise more fun. Let’s face it. Walking around the same neighborhood path or using the same cardio machine at the gym day-after-day not only has a plateau effect, but it’s boring. Heart rate training gives you goals to shoot for during each exercise session, making your workout more challenging and fun. It also makes the time go by faster.
The heart rate your friend works out at may not be the right heart rate for you to be aiming for. And, the heart rate chart on the gym wall will only give you general guidelines, not a customized training recommendation. Heart rate training is very individualized, and it is essential to find out what your current fitness level is and then move forward according to your personal goals. Get expert information from a fitness coach, trainer, or other reliable source, such as the Trainer To Go program. After all, if you are going to spend the time exercising, you might as well get the best results possible!
