IT ALL ADDS UP

I can recommend all sorts of ideas to burn calories and stay active, however, unless you really understand the way it works, the novelty of parking your car far away will wear off quickly.  You see, one pound of fat is 3,500 calories. So, in order to reduce body weight (fat) by one pound, there must be an increase in the number of calories expended or a decrease in the number of calories consumed by 3,500. Generally speaking, a combination of the two strategies works the best.

So, let’s say your goal during the holidays (or anytime) is to not gain weight.  And, lets say that by using the techniques I’ve mentioned next door and in previous issues, you burn an extra 200 calories per day. You know what that means?  That means you can eat an extra 200 calories per day (about two pieces of Sees bordeaux – yes, I’m obsessed), or 1,400 calories per week. Combine that with the eating strategies, and you are on your way to achieving your goal of nothing.  Nothing gained.  You stayed fit and trim.

The same mathematics can be applied to reducing body weight. If one pound is 3,500 calories, and you burn an extra 200 calories per day, you would lose about one pound in about 2 ½  weeks. Just think what would happen if you added 1,000 to 2,000 calories of exercise to your weekly routine, as recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine for fat loss. And, maybe instead of three beers, 5 nights per week, you change your lifestyle and now only drink 1-2 light beers, 3 nights per week. We’re talking over 1,000 calories per week.

With that said, here are 14 easy ways to burn calories as you go about your daily activities.

14 Easy Calorie Burners

  1. Use a cordless phone and move around while you talk on the phone. Headsets are the best; then you can do almost anything while on the phone.
  2. Keep away from drive-thrus.  At the bank or restaurant (we know what kind I’m talking about) park and walk in.
  3. At the office, deliver files or messages personally rather than using email or interoffice mail. The break will do your eyes and mind good while also burning calories.
  4. Wash and wax your own car.  What a great arm workout.
  5. Hand-wash your dishes instead of using the dishwasher.
  6. Do jumping jacks during TV commercials.  Start with 10 (or however many you can comfortably manage) and increase it each week.
  7. Invest in home exercise equipment like a treadmill, bike or elliptical trainer.  Exercise while watching TV or reading.
  8. Fire your maid, or at least cut back on how many times you use the service.  Rediscover the lost art of vacuuming.
  9. Make your bed everyday.
  10. Go miniature golfing or browse a museum with friends instead of going to the movies.
  11. When doing laundry (you’ve fired the maid, right?) make many trips taking your clothes to the washer.  Fold clothes in categories (her T-shirts, his socks, etc.) and make several trips from the dryer to your dresser.
  12. Park far away at the grocery store.  After you unload the groceries into your car, actually walk the cart back to the front of the store.
  13. Use stairs instead of the elevator or escalator.  If an escalator is the only option, walk it rather than riding it.
  14. Offer to babysit your friend’s toddler.  Play tag or hide-n-seek with your kids.
